Company Epsilon, the e-mail marketing service provider, announced today about the leak, which can adversely affect millions of users.
In the message the company reported that the hacking was reflected only in “certain parts” of the database users. Unauthorized entry into the system distribution provided access only to such data as names and email addresses of buyers, the company informed.
Because it is believed that Epsilon delivers more than 40 billion letters every year, “some of” the customer database may be actually very large.
Affected customers of Epsilon are supposed to be such large companies as supermarket chains Kroger, Citibank, TiVo, Walgreens, Capital One, Marriott Rewards and JP Morgan.
According to the report of MSNBC, one of the buyers of Epsilon, whose data were stolen, Marriott Rewards, warns that the stolen data contained more information than just the names and email addresses. According to them suffered also the information on the accumulated scores.
Most of the affected companies have already warned their customers about the danger of phishing.
