How to place your cutlery after a meal?

If you visit a restaurant so you should know rules of the etiquette. Surely you must know how to end your meal. What can be worse when a guest ends his meal and puts used cutlery directly on a tablecloth? Also he leaves a heap of scraps on the plate and puts around it dirty crumpled napkins.

Some rules of the etiquette

The good-mannered person when he finished his meal put the tableware on the plate in a special way. He puts the knife and a fork lie in parallel to each other and handles of both subjects look to the right. Such situation means that the guest finished a meal and the plate can be taken away. Dessert utensils usually leave in that ware in which the sweet dish was given. Also it can be put on the down plate  if the dessert was in a vase on a leg. The tableware never leaves simply on a tablecloth and doesn’t wipe with a napkin and, please, doesn’t wrap them in it.

If the knife or a fork occasionally fell down under the table you shouldn’t climb to get them drawing attention of others guests. If the cutlery is still necessary you should ask politely to give other. Anyway a good-mannered hostess will always forgive to the guest a similar oversight.

Leave unfinished meal or don’t?

According to the etiquette to leave the unfinished meal is indecent and bad-mannered. On the one hand, it is true because the hostess can think that the guest didn’t like the prepared dish. And obviously, the empty plate is the best compliment to culinary talents of the hostess. Besides when the meal is not eaten completely this causes difficulties to collecting and washing the tableware. At last, it will be offensive for the people who were arranging a party, bought products and spent many forces to prepare a meal, if the most part of guests leaves food unfinished.

So never serve yourself too much and don’t try to taste all dishes which are on the table. So problems with leaving food unfinished will not happen to you. However sometimes a food is served already divided into portions and you can’t ask to put less. And it can happen that some dish isn’t allowed to eat in big portions to someone because of medical indications Therefore, at least, silly to tell that the rule to eat everything up to the end is necessary to follow under any circumstances.

The use of napkins

It is also necessary to tell some words about use of napkins. During the food a napkin place is on a lap but not behind a shirt collar, a belt of trousers or somewhere else. When you have finished a meal so don’t wipe a mouth with a napkin but only slightly blot lips. Also it can be done before drinking from a glass to not remain fat prints on it. The used linen napkins can’t be rumpled or turned on the smoothed-down folds. They are left simply to the left of a plate. Put only tissues on the plate which are slightly rumpled but not crumpled.
