Then you returned to a table but you found out that the plate with an unfinished dish was taken away. You shouldn’t be indignant and make a claim to the waiter at once. If you need to leave the hall for more long time, use other sign. Put a knife with a fork on a plate, having crossed them. At this edge of a knife looks to the left side, and fork teeth to the right. Such arrangement of the cutlery on a plate tells to the waiter that the food hasn’t finished yet and the ware shouldn’t be carried away.

But it also means you’re still eating. In Europe when the soup is already eaten,  the spoon should be taken out and put on the lower plate.

The same is when you eat salads and desserts. Until you stopped eating, put a knife and a fork with their tips on its edge. After finish you meal put cutlery parallel on the plate. If the ware allows it is possible to leave a spoon directly in a vase.
