How to survive in prison if you have a life sentence?

To lose all life perspectives – this is an extreme situation. Compulsory life in an enclosed space, in a constant state of punishment and hopelessness is an unbearable situation for the person. A man without a future, loses its raison d’être. In this case, the convicted person must realize the need not only of physical survival, but also the retention of the individual from further destruction and the need for reconstruction of his personality.

Regression is the fate of most of the life of prisoners. Of the total number of life-sentenced prisoners, there are only five to seven per cent of those who seek to retain their sense of identity. The ability to think straight and to control themselves as a social person, only a few posess. A small part of them are aware of the extreme situation in which they happened to be. At the same time they are trying to preserve and recreate their identity, do physical and mental survival in prison.

Many villains are simply defective human material

Many of the perpetrators of terrible atrocities – are simply a defective human material. They degrade irreversibly. A member of the colony showed a note of one of them: “I could no longer endure this life … I am tired of cleaning mode, the wash. In the fasting state I do not want to perform it all. I am tempted to kill and eat a cellmate as I badly want meat.” I will not comment, it’s clear what happened to this man. These do not know remorse. It is meaningless to want something from them,  to  make them focus on standards.

Of course, the human mind has an amazing ability to adapt. But there are factors that harm a person: the monotony of life; disability to be isolated from the others – to be alone with yourself, total isolation from the people – the long-term isolation. These factors are stressful for the human psyche and its internal states.

The life in prison

Strict mode – this is not exactly a set routine of life, but – strictly executed rules with no deviation, no leniency and indulgence. The guards and the administration swear to implement the provisions under the charter regulations regarding maximum security in prison – because the penalty is a punishment: prisoners are condemned justly.

Everyone who is there is the killer. Some of them killed men, women and children. Others killed their relatives. The description of their terrible deeds freezes the blood. But they are already condemned by the court. They are now judging themselves…

Of course, prisoners want to live, but often they do not have enough energy to life. After living on the level of homeostasis human consciousness can not be open. Only a simple life “has a way of existence of protein bodies”. Their feelings – fall as particles of silt on the bottom. Slowly drowning, losing the sense of identity. They feel that they begin to die internally, trying to scramble up. It is very hard, exhausting struggle for their “I”.

The ability to survive under a predetermined condition

To survive in the conditions of life in prison, you need the ability to live in the given conditions. But to be able to live in the given conditions – it is a rare talent of intellectually, socially and spiritually gifted man. Higher education itself is not yet a foundation of spiritual heights. Just those who have it there, who studied, memorized, exercised brains are more resistant to conditions of life in prison. I look with great contrition for those sentenced to life imprisonment. Despair holds them constantly. And they desperately struggle not to become a plant and begin to live at the level of metabolism. And who from the beginning has had an opportunity to develop genetic or social reasons, he is simply encapsulated in his state.

A person in any situation should have the prospect of life and hope for the future. They almost do not have it there. Monotonous existence leads to two possible states: does the person insensitive to everything, or incredibly susceptible to the very small trifle – the look, tone of another person, even to the appearance in the corner of their intimate chamber a spider, gnats, to the weather outside.
