The Wall Street Journal reported that Google Inc. and Apple Inc. collect and store information about the location of users of not only mobile devices but also computers.

Both companies get their information when PC owners use Wi-Fi:  Apple gather information from some Macintosh computers, and Google – from computers that use the web browser Chrome.

Information comes to the companies when the computer scans the area around it searching for Wi-Fi network, usually after the user gives permission to the web site to determine his approximate location.

Last week  mass media received information that the iPhone 4 and  iPad 3G record information about the location of their owners and preserve it. Such conclusions were made by experts in the field of computer technology Alistair Allan and Pete Worden.

According to these experts, Apple mobile devices that are equipped by iOS 4 and technology 3G iPhone3G, iPhone3GS and iPhone 4 and iPad 3G, secretly from their owners automatically record the history of their movements and store this information in a folder consolidated.db. If the owner of the device synchronizes it with your computer using iTunes, this information is also protected on the computer. An example of such a function is laid out in Alan’s blog. Moreover, the folder with these tags (logs) is not encrypted and anybody can get access to it.
