Lipton tea caffeine content. Is this tea useful to drink?

In which tea – green or black there is more caffeine? Many people believe that caffeine content is higher in  stronger, richer black tea. Is this true?

For the analysis, we chose different brands producing tea, which are the most common drinks consumed in the world and contain significant amount of caffeine.

Methods of analysis

Green tea “mate” (leaf), tea “Batik” (granular in filter bags), tea “Lipton” (granular in filter bags), tea “Indian” (highest grade, sheet) were taken to the analysis.

The analyzed material is preliminarily ground in a mortar. Dry material 0.5g weight (accurately weighed) was transferred into a volumetric flask of 100 ml, poured with 80 ml of boiling distilled water and the flask was placed in a water bath to extract the content for 1 hour.

The hot extract is cooled to room temperature, adjusted to the mark with distilled water, stirred and filtered through filter paper. Then, 0.2 ml of the filtrate is taken and placed in a test tube with ground stopper, added with 5 ml of chloroform and vigorously shaken for 15 minutes. The resulting chloroform extract of caffeine is put for settling of the resulting emulsion for 2 hours. The aqueous layer was separated, and the chloroform extract of caffeine is poured in the spectrophotometer cuvette.

The results of the analysis

The results of the analysis can arrange teas in the following order according to the degree of caffeine in them:

  •  “Lipton” (5.443% (0.013%),
  • “Batik” (4.156% (0.051%),
  • “Indian” (3.799% (0.032%),
  • “Mate “(2.676% (0.0114%)

This result is explained as follows: “Lipton” and “Batik” are granulated teas that are in the filter bags, the concentration of caffeine in which is much higher than normal due to the use of granulation techniques. Furthermore, there is a possibility of artificial enrichment with caffeine. Teas “Indian” and “Mate” are a normal leaf tea, caffeine concentration in which slightly varies by the impact of technological processes.

The analysis results clearly show that caffeine reaches 30-47 mg / kg per day for tea “Lipton,” and, for example, “Mate” – 15-22 mg / kg per day at the rate of 2-3 cups of tea per day with an average weight of a person – 70 kg  and an average weight of tea to brew – 2 g (standard weight of tea in filter bags).
In connection with the above facts it is necessary to control the flow of caffeine in the body composed in caffeine-containing products.
