The museum is located in the heart of the city, next to the old City Garden, at a smal, cozy street called Havanna. The building where the museum is situated is now the architectural monument of the second half of the XIX century. The forms of the late Renaissance are used here, with a variation of the samples and motifs drawn from the architectural heritage of Italy.
The first museum exhibition was placed here in August 1944, it was the exhibition “The heroic defense of Odessa”. Here you can see documents, publications, objects of fine and applied arts, numismatic collections, weapons of XVII – XIX centuries, connected with the history of the city and the edge and once included in the collection of the Museum of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, the Museum of the book, the Museum of Old Odessa and some others were an integral part of Museum of Local History funds.
With the accumulation of material in the course of research and collecting activity some other exposures will be created revealing a variety of aspects of life of Odessa and its region.

Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art is one of the best museums of this profile in Ukraine. It was created in 1920 from the private collection of the local Committee of protection of monuments of art and antiquities, as well as of revenues from the City Museum of Fine Arts.
The building occupied by the museum is a monument of architecture, the palace which was built in 1856-1858 under the project of architect L. Otton.
The interior posesses rich stucco decoration, carving, decorating doors and furniture made of bronze.
There are the expositions of three divisions: the ancient, Western European and Oriental Art situated in twenty-three rooms of the first and second floor. Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art exhibits one of the richest collections of foreign art in Ukraine. Among the exhibits are the works by Hals, Caravaggio, Strozzi, Magnasco, china of the best European factories of XVIII – XX centuries. In the department of the East the collection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics of Iran, Tibet, China, India and Japan is exhibited.

The collection of Russian fine art in Odessa Art Museum is one of the most significant and multifaceted in Ukraine. It covers all kinds of visual arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative arts, and includes works by Russian and Ukrainian masters of iconography from the XVI century to the present day, averaging more than 10,000 original works.
The museum exhibition is located in 26 rooms on two floors. It is built in a historical-chronological order in compliance with the principle of a monographic show of works of each author.
The department of Modern Art represents the artistic life of Odessa from the 20s to the present day. The exhibition presents the best works of art of our city and other regions of Ukraine.
