Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater – the first theater in Odessa considering the time of construction, value and fame. It is a real Ukrainian pride!
The first building was opened in 1810 and burned down in 1873. The modern building was built in 1887 by the architects Fellner and Helmer in the style of the new Viennese baroque. Interior auditorium represents the stylized architecture of the late French rococo. The unique acoustics of the hall allows to convey even a whisper from the stage to any corner of the hall. Complete restoration of the theater building was completed in 2007.
Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov conducted in the theater, Fyodor Chaliapin, Enrico Caruso, Solomia Krushelnitskaya and Leonid Sobinov sang here, Anna Pavlova and Isadora Duncan danced. Alexander Pushkin mentions Odessa theater in the novel “Eugene Onegin”. The magazine «Forbes» included Odessa theater in the list of most unusual sights in Eastern Europe.
